Programme

On Sunday, 18 September 2011, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) will, for the 11th time, host the German Aerospace Day event. Here, interested adults and inquisitive children, techies and members of the general public with genuine enthusiasm for aerospace will be able to gain a first-hand impression of excellent research work. As in previous years, German Aerospace Day will once again be held at the DLR facility in Cologne, and also on a cordoned off area of the adjacent airport (Zulu Stand) that can be reached from the DLR site. Philip Rösler, Germany’s Federal Minister for Economics and Technology, is the patron of the event.

From 10:00 to 18:00, DLR institutes will open their doors to unveil their work for the ‘Knowledge for Tomorrow’. Examples include research work on the health of astronauts in space, as well as terrestrial applications in the fields of telemedicine and travel medicine. The research being conducted for the quiet, low-pollutant engines of the future will be on show. Newly developed high-tech materials for aircraft and spacecraft will also be on display. Information about current space missions, such as Rosetta, will be provided and visitors will have the opportunity to take a look inside the operations centre for the Philae lander. Astronauts who are being trained at ESA’s European Astronaut Centre to live and work on the International Space Station will report on their work and life in space.

On German Aerospace Day, the HR Marketing department will be running a Career Stand offering information about entry-level opportunities at DLR, about the scope for student placements as well as work on graduate dissertations and doctorates and about current vacancies. For younger visitors, the DLR_School_Lab will prepare experiments on research topics relating to aeronautics, spaceflight, energy and transport. In addition, DLR scientists will describe their work in an accessible range of fascinating lectures.

Various aircraft will be on show in a static display, including some from DLR’s own research fleet: the most modern helicopter in the world, the EC135 FHS, the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, the atmosphere research aircraft Falcon 20E, the Dornier Do 228-212 and the technology showcase Airbus A320 ATRA. For the purpose of a research mission, the parabolic flight Airbus A300 ZERO-G will be stopping over in Cologne and can also be viewed by visitors. Even SOFIA the airborne observatory will be there, and visitors will be allowed on board. The German Air Force (Luftwaffe) will also be participating with aircraft such as the ECR Tornado, the F4 Phantom and the Eurofighter, as well as a Transall C160 and the Airbus A310 MedEvac, which has already performed service on international disaster relief missions. As a special guest, an Airbus A380 is expected, and visitors will be allowed on board.

The accompanying entertainment programme also offers many attractions, ranging from static exhibits to round trips in a helicopter to a stage programme.
